How to Fill Holes in Wood Houses as You Prep to Paint
Repairing Holes in Wooden Houses before Painting then Sand
It would be nice if a wooden house did not require much more than a little bit of home maintenance and repair. Only scrape and caulk some, put down some sheeting for paint drips, and slap on a new coat of durable house paint.
Well, it just is not so easy. Rather than easy, one almost always has to fix the wood exterior of your house.
My home needed more than just some new paint. The galvanized sheet metal edging of my original roof leaked and enabled the water to repeatedly dampen the facing board under the gutter. As the house aged, the wood became rotten and the paint fell away.
I researched how to get it done right. I was worried whether wood putty could fill in the gaps properly.
My buddy next door patched his wood facing boards frequently in an endless battle rot from termites. Sam’s repairs looked good years later. I wanted know why his repairs did not crack.
Fix Wood Holes with the Auto Repair Filler Called Bondo and Use Wood Power Tools to Finish Sanding
He said an experienced handyman suggested to him that automobile filler called Bondo to patch any imperfections in the home’s surface. To get a better understanding look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bondo_(putty)
I had used Bondo on a car repair. This auto filler was heavy and durable. Bondo could be planed. When he brought up using this auto filler, It was obvious that it would do the job.
With auto filler, the trick is to do the job in layers with big gobs initially and less material thereafter. Furthermore, you can do fine finishing work, with ordinary kitchen wax paper and wood to shape. To sand before priming and painting all you need to do is to use one of the wood power tools to make the Bondo blend smoothly with the wood.
If you have an old wood deck, you should be aware that you can also use Bondo to repair cracks in the planks of your wood deck. It comes in handy, when you are preping a redwood deck for treatment.
Consider that Bondo has a distinctive light reddish color and this will be obvious, if you only use a non-hiding water proofing on a wooden deck. When you desire to preserve a lumber deck after patching with Bondo, you might need to use prime and painting.
Note that you do not need to find an automotive store for Bondo. Just look for Bondo at Home Depot or Lowes. Incidentally, my painting prep job still looks great after several years.
